Worshippers Interceding For Excellence Church - Where lives are changed, hurts are healed, and hope is restored

Is It I?

And they were exceeding sorrowful, and began everyone of them to say unto him, Lord, is it I?
Matthew 6:22

In these three words we see the disciples grief-stricken, quite unlike their normal finger-pointing, fault-finding, human ways.

"Lord, is it I?" The question burned and stung their consciences as each one recognized his potential for committing this awful deed of betraying Jesus Christ.

"Lord, is it I?" Can you not almost see them, wanting to know, yet hardly daring to ask, "Lord, is it I?"  They could have stayed in their seats, pointing a judicial finger at another.

But instead of speculating about others, they looked within and left a proper example for us to do the same.  We should be like David when confronted by Nathan, and admit, "I have sinned." rather than being like Adam in the Garden, who said, "It was the woman you gave me," or like Saul, who blamed his people for his own failure.

Our tendency is to blame circumstances or others.  However, we will never experience the healing balm of God's forgiveness as long as we make excuses for our behavior.  We find it only when we accept full responsibility for our sin.

Becoming accountable for our actions puts us sometimes in a lonely position, but it is the only way to personal maturity, and it will prepare us for the day when we shall stand before the Judge of all the earth.
